Testing messaging to drive sign up

HYPOTHESIS

The benefit screen is the last thing users see before the 50%-off Buy Now promo. Reinforcing the high-level benefits of the app and making the content more confident, energetic, and encouraging will increase day-1 signups.

A/B test screens

THE THINKING

The control screen described the product ("Your QuickBooks is ready," a list of features). The test variant reframed the same information around what the user could now do — action-oriented outcomes ("Run your business on the go," "Maximize your deductions") paired with a more energetic headline and CTA. The goal wasn't new information — it was shifting the emotional register from "here's what's set up" to "you're ready to go."

CONTEXT

The QuickBooks Self-Employed user was young, energetic, positive and running a small business, always on the go. The app copy was more casual, fun and conversational than mid-market or other Intuit apps that felt more professional.

  • Test (Winner): Run your business on the go · See how much you make · Get organized for tax time · Maximize your deductions

CTA

  • Test (Winner): "Full speed ahead!"

RESULTS

Install-to-Subscription Conversion (ITC)

  • Android: 110 ITC — test variant won

  • iOS: 105 ITC — test variant won

TAKEAWAY

Reframing identical functionality around user outcomes — rather than product features — and matching that with a more confident, energetic tone increased day-1 signups on both platforms. The win validates the hypothesis: at the last moment before a paywall, how the benefit is framed matters as much as what the benefit is.

-“ITC” (install-to-subscription) measures the percentage of users who installed the app and converted to a paid subscription. A higher number means more installs turned into subscribers.
